The Hanging Gardens of Marbella

No, it’s not a play on words, but actually the popular name of a very elegant part of beachside Marbella. The ‘Hanging Gardens’ area does draw reference to the mythical hanging gardens of Babylon, however, as the exclusive apartment complexes that line elegant boulevards just after the Golden Mile and between Ricardo Soriano – the main avenue in Marbella – and the beach are characterised by abundant greenery flowing from their balconies.

Many of these luxurious complexes feature a gently receding line that resembles a prism or ‘pyramid’, adding further to the sense of elegance and the impact of the flowering plants set against the sleek white buildings. It is perhaps the most exclusive part of Marbella town, and in reality a continuation of the Golden Mile that offers the latter’s peace and exclusivity while also being within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, cafés, boutiques and tapas bars of the downtown areas.

On the way you will pass delightfully shaded little squares and parks, or can take the Paseo Marítimo – the stylish palm-lined beachfront promenade – all the way from here to Puerto Banús or Marbella’s very own yacht harbour. In fact, the promenade continues all the way to La Bajadilla, the charming little fishing harbour – and beyond, passing famous fish restaurants, beachside chiringuito bars and trendy beach clubs along the way.

Also within walking distance is the beautiful historic quarter of Marbella, known as the ‘Casco Antiguo’, with its car-free cobblestone streets that wind their way through a myriad of squares and alleyways dissecting elegant Spanish town houses. The area is rich in atmosphere and filled with quaint tapas bars, bistros, boutiques and antique shops, explaining why it’s such a perennial favourite with locals and visitors alike.

With so much within easy striking distance combined with a peaceful, exclusive frontline beach setting close to the famous Golden Mile and Puerto Banús, the apartments and penthouses in the Hanging Gardens area of Marbella are not surprisingly highly desired by upmarket residents and owners of holiday homes, making this one of the most interesting and diverse residential areas in and around Marbella.
